A barn about five miles north of Baker City on the Medical Spring Highway was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon.

The barn was owned by Bob and Jill Turner of 20260 Medical Springs Highway, said Baker City Fire Chief John Clark. He estimated the loss, which was not insured, at about $100,000.

“The barn was fully involved when we got there,” Clark said.

The structure measured about 50 feet by 100 feet, he said. It housed five horses, which were in an outside run when the fire started. They were moved through a gate to a safer spot and were not injured.

The barn included stalls with an automatic watering system for the horses and stored four to five tons of hay, Clark said. A chicken coop and 15 chickens also were lost in the fire.

The cause of the fire, which was not suspicious, is undetermined.

“It was investigated and the cause was undetermined,” Clark said. “There will be no other follow-up.”

The Baker fire chief was the incident commander Monday because the Baker City Fire Department, which provides automatic response to the Baker Rural Fire Department, was the first to arrive at the scene and Baker Rural Chief Sean Lee was not available.

Firefighters from Haines also provide automatic response to Baker Rural and Clark said he put in a special call to the North Powder Fire Department to bring more water to fight the fire. All told, 25 firefighters responded, Clark said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Turner property at 4:37 p.m. They cleared at 6:30 p.m., Clark said. No problems were encountered fighting the fire and there were no injuries, he said.
