Marli Lind placed third in her division at the Rollie Lane Invitational wrestling tournament on Jan. 4, 2025.

Marli Lind finished third, Madison Meyer was eighth and the Baker/Powder Valley girls wrestling team placed 20th out of 83 teams in the two-day Rollie Lane Invitational girls wrestling tournament in Nampa, Idaho.

The tournament, with schools from six states, wrapped up Saturday, Jan. 4.

After winning her first three matches, all on Friday, Lind, in the 152-pound division, lost in the quarterfinals to Gemma Lebeau of Eagle, Idaho. 

Lind, a senior, then won four straight matches, including one over teammate Kate Norton, to place third. Lind beat Dakota Frogge of Wasatch, Utah, by technical fall in the third-place match.

Baker coach Chris Price said the sheer scale of the Rollie Lane, one of the bigger wrestling tournaments in the West, is impressive.

“This tournament compares to the state tournament and gives all of our wrestlers an idea of how they will match up with the competition,” Price said. “As a team placing 20th out of over 80 schools was really amazing. I can’t say enough about how this group conducts itself on and off the mat. I have enjoyed every minute with them as their coach. We will be back to work this week, trying to get better and ready for the next time we hit the mat.

“This is just a testament to how hard and talented our girl wrestlers are,” Price said. “Every one of our Baker wrestlers won at least one match, and we were able to advance five out of the eight girls to day two.”

Lilly Collins had five matches on Friday, winning four.

“She finished 5-2 in the tournament but wrestled at a very high level,” Price said. “Tessa Gerrick also wrestled really tough, fighting being ill and not feeling well, but was able to make it to day two, and put out a winning record. Kate Norton was able to advance in the champions bracket very well for being a first-time wrestler at Rollie. She faced a very tough wrestler who dropped her down into the consolation side, and she was able to work through the consolation bracket until we had to face a Baker on Baker match to end her tournament.”

Price said Meyer and Lind each “had their own challenges in their weight classes but were able to overcome most of them to stand on the podium this year. These wrestlers are making tremendous strides to peak at the right time to show how good they can be.”

The Bulldogs will return to Idaho this weekend to compete in the Jay Bird tournament Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10 and 11, at Columbia High School in Nampa.
