Firefighters have made significant progress on containing the Boulder Creek Fire burning in the Eagle Cap Wilderness nortthwest of Boulder Park, west of Eagle Creek.

The fire was mapped at 104 acres.

About 50 people are working on the fire, and the south end, up the west and east sides to about halfway up the fire perimeter, is “secure,” Walter Lowell, public affairs officer for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, said on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 21.

“If things continue to look good today, we will start scaling back” on the number of firefighters (Thursday), Lowell said.

On Monday the Baker and Union County sheriff’s offices have issued Level 1 — be ready — and Level 2 — be prepared — evacuation notices for an area around the Boulder Creek Fire.

Baker County Sheriff Travis Ash said there are no permanent residences within the evacuation area.

There is a summer home tract near the Boulder Park trailhead, where several privately owned structures stand on public land.

Ash said one goal with the evacuation notice is to alert hikers, campers and other recreationists about the fire in the area.

The Level 2 evacuation area is within the wilderness.

The Level 1 area includes the West Eagle and Boulder Park trailheads.

The Lyle Fire north of Whitney has not grown this week and remains 22.5 acres.
