CLASS 1A BASKETBALL: Crane boys, girls repeat as Class 1A state champions

The Crane girls and boys basketball teams added another layer to the school’s basketball dynasty Saturday night, March 8, in the Baker High School gym.

For the third time in the past four years, the school in remote Harney County about 30 miles east of Burns has won the Class 1A girls and boys state titles in the same season.

The Crane girls beat Union, 50-32, and the boys won their fourth straight title, 45-42 over Mannahouse Academy of Portland. The Crane boys also set an all-time Oregon high school record with their 57th straight win.

Two other Oregon high schools have won four straight boys hoops state titles: Jesuit in 2009-12 and West Linn in 2013-16. Both are Class 6A schools.

In 2022 the Mustangs became the first Class 1A school to win both the girls and boys hoops titles in the same season, a feat they repeated in 2024.

The Crane girls have won four of the past five state titles. The only blemish was a runner-up finish in 2023 when Crane lost to Damascus Christian, 35-33.

Crane is the only public boarding school in Oregon, drawing students from an area larger than several East Coast states.

In the championship games Saturday before a packed BHS gym, the Crane girls dominated after a close first quarter that ended with the Mustangs leading 11-8.

Crane started the second quarter with a 17-0 run and Union, the tournament’s top seed, never threatened the Mustangs after that.

The boys game was much closer.

After Crane took a 25-16 lead in the second quarter, Mannahouse, which moved down from Class 2A this season, closed the half with a 9-1 run. Mannahouse then took the lead in the second half and was still ahead 36-32 with 7:30 left in the game.

But the Mustangs, showing the experience they’ve gained in winning 12 straight tournament games over four years, went on a 13-2 run, holding the Lions scoreless for more than six minutes.

Cody Siegner led Crane with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Joah Friedrichsen added 12 points, and Casse Roozeboom had nine on a trio of 3-pointers.

Caleb Dickinson led Mannahouse with 16 points.
