BAKER, POWDER VALLEY, PINE EAGLE TRACK AND FIELD: Bulldogs, Badgers open season at Ontario Icebreaker; Spartans compete at Vale

Published 5:52 am Friday, March 21, 2025

ONTARIO — Baker won five individual events and one relay race in the season-opening Ontario Icebreaker track and field meet Thursday, March 20, at Ontario High School.

In the girls meet, Baker’s Sammy Gressley won the 200 meters, Kate Norton won the shot put and Molly Rasmussen won the high jump. Baker’s 4×400 relay team — Claire Bachman, Kayla Coley, Meren Jesenko and Sammy Gressley — also finished first.

On the boys side, Rasean Jones, the two-time defending state champion in both hurdles races, didn’t compete in those events as he had just a few days of practice since helping Baker win its second straight state basketball title.

Instead, Jones competed in, and won, both the 200 and 400 meter dashes.

The Bulldogs’ boys and girls 4×100 relay teams both finished second. The girls team is Claire Bachman, Sammy Gressley, Kayla Coley and Meren Jesenko. The boys team is Everett Freeland, Isaiah Hannah, Bryson Petrucci and Calder Daniels.

Kate Norton placed second in the javelin, and Sammy Gressley was second in the 100 meters.

“The best way to describe yesterday is exciting,” Baker coach Suzy Cole said. “The weather wasn’t bad for it being March still, but definitely could have been much worse. With only three weeks practice, we obviously are lacking endurance and technical skills but wow, the kids’ attitudes and competitiveness is impressive. Having the new coaches we have this year so all the kids are getting the specific training they need is showing already in the performances of the kids and their dedication. It’s going to be a great year.”

Assistant coaches are: Cody Decarli, Dakotah Keys, Jill Snow, Jorden Osborn, Karissa Kingsbury, Laurel Trindle, Neil John Chaney and Robbie Langrell.
