RICHLAND — An early morning fire destroyed a barn near Richland and apparently killed some newborn goats on Thursday, Feb. 27.
The fire was reported at 2:46 a.m. on a property on the north side of Highway 86 about eight miles west of Richland, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office dispatch log.
The owners, Tony and Shirley Shold, called 911 to report the fire, said Dave Kingsbury, chief of the Eagle Valley Fire District.
Kingsbury said the cause hasn’t been determined.
There is no electricity in the barn, he said.
The barn was engulfed in flames when the Sholds reported the blaze, Kingsbury said.
When firefighters arrived the building had already collapsed, he said.
Kingsbury said the barn was relatively old. He didn’t know the square footage.
The barn is a few hundred feet from the couple’s home, and the flames didn’t spread to any other structures, Kingsbury said.
No one was hurt, he said.
Kingsbury said it appeared that some goats died in the fire. He said the Sholds also raise sheep and dogs.
