Baker boys vs. Roosevelt
First quarter
Trending
Much like during a 57-35 loss to La Lumiere, Indiana, on Friday, Baker struggled with Roosevelt’s height advantage inside. The Roughriders had two tip-ins and another basket off an offensive rebound in taking a 16-6 lead after the first quarter.
Roosevelt’s halfcourt trap also forced consecutive Baker turnovers, and the Roughriders blocked three Baker shots in the key in the first few minutes.
Second quarter
Roosevelt seemed on the verge of a rout when Adrian “Fuzzy” Montague drained a 3-pointer to give the Roughriders their biggest lead, 23-7.
But Baker responded with the sort of defense-fueled scoring run that is a trademark of teams coached by Jebron Jones. Eli Long and Rasean Jones led the 15-2 run over more than four minutes, with Long scoring seven points and Jones four. Jones also passed to Jaxon Logsdon cutting down the lane for an easy basket as Baker cut the lead to 25-22.
Roosevelt scored the final two baskets, however, to boost its lead back to 29-22 at halftime.
Long led Baker with 10 points.
Third quarter
Baker had a disastrous start to the second half, as Roosevelt scored the first 16 points to take its biggest lead, 45-22.
Rasean Joes broke the run with an inside basket, and that started a 7-0 Baker run that included a 16-foot jumper by Jack Joseph and Long’s conventional 3-point play. After two straight Roosevelt baskets, Long swished a 3-pointer to make it 49-32 after three quarters.
Fourth quarter
Roosevelt started the final period with a 6-0 run and Baker never cut the lead below 20 points thereafter en route to a 67-45 loss.
Long led Baker with a game-high 22 points. Rasean Jones added 14.
Baker was outrebounded 44-26, including giving up 20 offensive rebounds, four by Syrius Owens, who led the Roughriders with 20 points.
Baker, 6-3 on the season, will play Nelson, another Class 6A school, from Happy Valley southeast of Portland, on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 10:30 a.m.

Baker girls vs. Cottage Grove
First quarter
Freshman Molly Rasmussen staked the Bulldogs to a 9-0 lead, with a three baskets and three free throws in the first four minutes. After Cottage Grove got to within 9-8, Lily Logsdon swished a deep 3-pointer, and Kathryn Gentry had consecutive baskets inside to give Baker a 16-8 lead after one quarter.
Baker’s fullcourt press forced multiple turnovers and led to two baskets.
Second quarter
After a 5-0 Cottage Grove run trimmed Baker’s lead to 18-15, the Bulldogs dominated the rest of the quarter, relying primarily on the press. The Lions struggled to advance the ball even to midcourt on several possessions, and steals led to breakaway baskets by Ashlyn Dalton and Molly Rasmussen, and then two straight by Dalton, as Baker closed the half on a 14-4 run to lead 32-19 at halftime.
Dalton had 10 points in the quarter, and Molly Rasmussen had four, giving her a team-high 13 in the first half.
Third quarter
Baker’s press continued to wreak havoc, yielding several steals and easy baskets, but Cottage Grove made three 3-pointers to keep the game from becoming a blowout.
Baker led 45-33 after three quarters as Dalton scored six points and Molly Rasmussen five.
Fourth quarter
Cottage Grove got as close as 10, at 45-35, but Baker scored three baskets in less than a minute, two by Dalton after steals, to boost the lead back to 51-35.
Baker went on to win, 59-39, and take third place in the tournament. Baker is 7-5 on the season. The Bulldogs return home for the first time in almost a month to play Crook County on Jan. 4 at 12:30 p.m.
