BAKER GIRLS BASKETBALL: Bulldogs’ big rally falls just short against Corbett

Baker freshman Molly Rasmussen goes to the basket against Vale's Kesley Stepleton on Dec. 10, 2024.

The Baker girls basketball team nearly completed an improbable comeback for its third straight win, but the rally fell just short in a 51-47 loss to Corbett on Friday afternoon, Dec. 20, in the semifinals of the Seaside Holiday Classic tournament.

After Corbett took its biggest lead, 36-19, early in the third quarter, Baker methodically trimmed the lead, eventually forging a 46-46 tie on Gracie Spike’s basket late in the game.

But Corbett scored five of the last six points.

Baker, 4-4 overall, opened the tournament Thursday evening by beating previously undefeated The Dalles, 46-42, led by freshman Molly Rasmussen’s 20 points. The Dalles beat Corbett 52-33 on Dec. 13.

Baker concludes play at the tournament Saturday, Dec. 21, at 12:30 p.m. against Seaside. This is a rematch of a Dec. 5 game at the Crook County tournament, in which Baker beat the Seagulls 51-45.

First quarter

Molly Rasmussen started fast, scoring the first four points of the game.

But Corbett responded with a 10-1 run to lead 10-5.

Emy Myer ended the run with a 3-pointer, but Corbett’s Adia Fancher immediately followed with a 3-pointer to make it 13-8.

Spike bounced in a runner from the key just before the buzzer to cut the lead to 13-10.

Second quarter

Corbett surged to a 19-12 lead before Logsdon converted a conventional 3-point play, rolling in a contested shot in the key, to make it 19-15.

But the Cardinals then scored seven straight, five by Fancher, to take their biggest lead at 26-15. Corbett extended the scoring run to 12-0 to lead 31-15, as Baker struggled with turnovers.

Kathryn Gentry made a tough turnaround for the final basket of the half to get Baker to within 31-17.

Third quarter

Corbett took its biggest lead, 36-19, on Fancher’s 3-pointer, but Baker rallied behind its top outside shooter, Myer, who made consecutive 3-pointers as part of a 10-0 Baker run.

Corbett led 40-30 after three quarters.

Fourth quarter

Baker had a great start to the final period, as Ashlyn Dalton scored inside, was fouled and made the free throw, followed by Molly Rasmussen’s breakaway layin after a steal, to cut the Corbett lead in half, at 40-35.

After Fancher’s free throw, Dalton scored on a rebound to cut the lead to 41-37.

Jayden Whitford then cut to the basket and took a pass from Molly Rasmussen for a basket that got Baker within two points, the closest the Bulldogs had been since the first quarter.

But Baker’s comeback wasn’t quite finished.

After Corbett went up 46-42, Molly Rasmussen scored inside, and after Baker forced a turnover, Myer whipped a pass to Spike in the lane for the tying basket.

But Baker couldn’t quite get over the hump.

Corbett’s Lilly Schimel swished a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals the lead for good at 49-46. Spike made one of two free throws, but Fancher’s steal and layin in the final 10 seconds clinched the win.

Schimel (23 points) and Fancher, with 26, combined to score 49 of Corbett’s 51 points.
