BAKER/POWDER VALLEY BOYS WRESTLING: Bulldogs 10th at Muilenburg tournament, Aldo Duran champion at 126 pounds

Published 5:35 pm Friday, December 13, 2024

Baker junior Aldo Duran placed third in the Class 4A state wrestling tournament on Feb. 24, 2024, at Portland's Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

LA GRANDE — Baker’s Aldo Duran won the individual title at 126 pounds and the Baker/Powder Falley boys wrestling team placed 10th in the Muilenburg Memorial tournament Dec. 13-14 in La Grande.

Duran, who placed third in the 2024 state tournament and fourth in 2023, pinned Tobijah Mauck of Banks in just 51 seconds in the championship match at La Grande.

Duran won all five of his matches by pin.

“Aldo is on a mission this year,” Baker coach Jeris Stephens said.

Stephens, who said he first coached Duran as a five-year-old with the Baker Mat Club, said Duran works hard to fine-tune his technique, something that can make the difference during the state tournament.

At 150 pounds, Daniel Maldonado won his first two matches, both on Friday. On Saturday, Maldonado lost to Tensei Thompson of Bishop Kelly in the quarterfinals. Maldonado then beat Santiago Perez of Weiser and Logan Riga of Estacada to advance to the third-place match. Maldonado lost to James Turner of Banks and placed fourth.

“Daniel won a couple of really tough matches in the consolation rounds,” Stephens said.

Alex Wise, at 165 pounds, and Alexander Rexroad, at 190, both had first-round byes and both won their second-round matches.

On Saturday, Wise lost in the quarterfinals to Maverick Heimbuck of Scappoose, and lost to James Korman of Barlow in the consolation round 3.

Rexroad lost to Cayden Baker of Scappoose in the quarterfinals, then beat Trent Rogers of Banks in consolation round 3. Rexroad lost to Luka Bartko-Wilson of Oregon City in the consolation round 4.

La Grande won the team title with 346.5 points. Baker had 114 points.

Stephens said he was “very pleased” with Baker’s performance after a somewhat disappointing start to the season in duals against Columbia and Nampa Christian in Idaho on Dec. 4.

“The team in my opinion performed really well considering how tough (the Muilenburg) tournament is,” Stephens said. “I think we wrestled really well.”

Baker travels to Elgin for the Elgin Memorial Classic Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20 and 21.

Duran will be seeking to cap his high school career by winning his weight class for the fourth straight year in the tournament, Stephens said.

The tournament, which is smaller than the Muilenburg, is a good chance for Baker’s younger wrestlers to gain experience, he said.
