BAKER/POWDER VALLEY GIRLS WRESTLING: Bulldogs take 7th place at Ardis Nash Memorial

HOMEDALE, Idaho — The Baker/Powder Valley girls wrestling team placed seventh out of nearly 40 teams at the Ardis Nash Memorial tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 and 7.

The Bulldogs amassed 86 points. Eagle, Idaho, won the team title with 138 points.

Kate Norton placed second in the 165-pound division. Madison Meyer was fourth at 235.

Baker/Powder Valley coach Chris Price said the Bulldogs “did exceptionally well” at the tournament.

“I was impressed and honored to be their coach by how they handled themselves and represented Baker High School,” Price said. “After the first 20 matches in only five weight classes, we had 18 victories by pin and one win by technical fall. This is the start of a tournament that coaches dream up. As we progressed through day one, our wrestlers had some competitive matches that made us dig deep and test our skills. At the end of day one, we still had five wrestlers in the championship brackets, with two of them in the semi-finals.

“As the tournament progressed, we lost a few matches against tough opponents ultimately leaving Kate Norton in the finals at the 165 weight class and Madison Meyer wrestling for 3rd and 4th in the 235 weight class. This tournament had over 300 girl wrestlers and almost 40 schools represented. For the first tournament of the year, we could not ask for a better start to our season. This only makes me, as the coach, extremely excited to see what is in store for us.”

The Bulldogs will compete in the Safeway Buckle tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, at La Grande High School. The Baker/Powder Valley boys team will compete in the Muilenburg tournament in La Grande, also on Friday and Saturday.
