Powder Valley football

Powder Valley regained the lead at 16-8 in the second quarter. Cove scored a touchdown but the Badgers denied the two-point conversion and led 16-14.
Powder Valley drove inside the Cove 20 late in the second quarter, but a fourth-down pass was incomplete with less than a minute left in the first half.
Cove didn’t run out the clock, however, and tried three passes, the last of which was incomplete and gave the Badgers the ball with 23 seconds left inside the Cove 25.
Quarterback Breyton Golar ran to the Cove 10, and Tucker Martin carried to the Leopard 5 with 7 seconds left, when Powder coach Riley Martin called timeout. On the final play of the half, Golar scrambled to his right and outran the Cove defenders to the right corner of the end zone to give Powder a 22-14 lead. That’s where the score stayed at halftime as the two-point conversion failed.
Second half
Golar lofted a pass just as two Leopards were converging on him, and Caden Anderson-Ficek stretched out to make the catch and take the ball inside the Cove 10. On third and goal from the 1, Golar again evaded two tacklers and went untouched into the end zone to make it 28-14 with 6:32 left in the third quarter. Tucker Martin broke three tackles on the two-county conversion to make it 30-14.
Cove responded immediately with a touchdown after a long run by Micah Jayne to the Badger 1. The two-point conversion cut Powder’s lead to 30-22.
Jordan Little ran the ensuing kickoff back to the Powder 49. But the Leopards got the ball back with an interception and ran it back to the Powder 45. Cove took advantage of the turnover, scoring a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Maverick Tidwell Stone. Jayne’s pass to Tidwell Stone for the two-point conversion tied the score at 30 with 11:57 left in the game.
The Leopards then recovered an onside kick at the Badger 47, but Powder forced a punt and took over at their own 15. But a muffed punt gave the Leopards possession at the Powder 15 with 5:30 left in the game.
Powder stopped Cove on three running plays, making it fourth and 3 at the 8-yard line. Jayne lofted a pass into the end zone but it was deflected and the Badgers took over at their own 8 with 3:58 left. The Badgers couldn’t get a first down, and Golar’s punt was downed at the Powder 44 with 2:05 left in the game.
On Cove’s second play, Little intercepted Jayne’s pass at the 15-yard line. On second down Golar was tackled at the Powder 4 after an errant snap, and Cove called timeout with 28 seconds left. After a running play gained a yard, Cove called timeout again with 16 seconds left. Golar was able to get off a punt from his own end zone that was downed at the Powder 33 with 5 seconds left.
Jaynes’ pass was incomplete, forcing overtime.
First overtime
Powder Valley had the ball first, starting at the Cove 10. A false start penalty moved the ball back to the 15. A holding penalty on second down brought the ball to the 25, and Golar scrambled for two yards to the 23. After an incomplete pass, Golar avoided what seemed to be a certain sack and lofted a pass to Little, who got behind a Cove defender in the end zone. The two-point conversion failed, and Powder led 36-30.
Cove then had possession starting at the 10. Brody Fite ran for three yards on first down on an option pitch from Jayne. On second down a false start penalty cost the Leopards five yards. Jayne then lofted a pass to the right corner of the end zone where Tidwell Stone, at 6-foot-5, came down with the ball to tie the score at 36.
On the two-point conversion try, Cove was called for a penalty, moving the ball from the 3-yard line to the 8. Jayne threw to the end zone and Powder was called for pass interference, giving the Leopards another chance to win the game, starting from the 4-yard line. Jayne pitched to Fite, but Little pushed him out of bounds to force a second overtime.
Second overtime
Cove had the ball first, starting at the 10. On first down, Tidwell Stone took a delayed handoff and ran in to give the Leopards a 42-36 lead. On the two-point try, Cade Thompson blitzed up the middle and corraled Jayne for a loss, and the score remained 42-36.
On Powder’s possession, a penalty forced the Badgers to start at the 15. Golar ran for five yards on first down. A face mask penalty on Cove moved the ball to the 5, and gave Powder a first down.
On second down, Tucker Martin took a direct snap, avoided a tackler and ran in for the tying touchdown, giving the Badgers a chance to win the game with a two-point conversion. Golar’s pass fell incomplete in the end zone, forcing a third overtime with the score tied at 42.
Third overtime
Powder had the ball first. Golar took the snap and followed his blockers around the left side for eight yards to the 2. On second down Golar went up the middle but was stopped just short of the goal line. On third down Golar was tackled inside the 1 again, and Powder called timeout before the critical fourth-down play.
Golar went left but was stopped short. Cove took possession at the 10 with a chance to win the game with a touchdown.
And the Leopards did just that, as Tidwell Smith scored on another delayed handoff, the same play Cove used to score in the second overtime, to give the Leopards a 48-42 win.
Despite the loss, Powder Valley qualified for the Class 1A 8-man playoffs. The Badgers will travel to Dufur for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 9.
