Powder Valley swept Cove to claim third place in the Old Oregon League tournament Saturday, Oct. 26, at Baker High School.
The Badgers finished the regular season 22-7 overall and are the seventh seed in the Class 1A playoffs, a 32-team bracket. Powder Valley will play host to Jordan Valley on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The time hasn’t been set. If Powder wins, it would need to beat either Southwest Christian or Prairie City/Burnt River on Nov. 2 to advance to the state tournament Nov. 8-9 at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.
Powder beat 13th-ranked Cove 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 in the third-place match.
The eighth-ranked Badgers opened the tournament Friday, Oct. 25, with a five-set, come-from-behind win over Joseph. After dropping the first two sets, 25-22, 25-22, the Badgers won three straight, 25-23, 25-13, 15-10.
In a semifinal match, also on Friday, Powder lost in five sets to Imbler, 23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13.
Imbler beat Union in five sets to win the district title.
The Old Oregon League has three of the state’s top teams. Union is ranked second, Imbler fifth and Powder Valley eighth. All three qualified for the playoffs — Union is the third seed and Imbler the fourth seed. Two other Old Oregon League teams also qualified for the playoffs — Cove is the 13th seed and Elgin is the 21st seed.
“I think it is pretty special that five of the Old Oregon League teams are in the state playoffs,” Powder Valley coach Marji Lind said. “That is pretty fantastic and shows how tough the league is. I wish every one of them the best.”
Powder Valley and Jordan Valley played once this season, in the first match of the year on Aug. 30. Powder Valley won in three sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23. Jordan Valley is 15-11 overall and the Mustangs were 3-3 in the High Desert League.
“They are a quick team that can cover the court well,” Lind said of the Mustangs. “We will have to be consistent and aggressive. It should be a good match.”
Powder Valley setter Marli Lind was named the league’s player of the year, and Marji Lind was coach of the year.
