BAKER VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs travel to Sheridan for Saturday tournament

The Baker volleyball team traveled to Sheridan, west of Salem, for a tournament on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Pool play
Baker vs. Westside Christian
First set
Baker led 5-2 early, and it was tied at 5 and 7 before Westside Christian scored five straight points to take control.
Baker got within 15-11 after consecutive blocks by Lexi Rupel and a combo block by Rupel and Jaxyn Ramos, but Westside Christian went on a 5-1 run to take a 20-12 lead and force a Baker timeout.
Ramos had a kill and an ace serve to get Baker within 20-14, and Raegan Gulick’s solo block got Baker to within 21-16. But Westside, ranked seventh in Class 3A, took a 23-17 lead. Gulick had another block, and Ashlyn Dalton had a kill and Olivia Jacoby an ace serve to cut the lead to 23-20 and prompt a Westside Christian timeout.
Baker then continued its scoring run to 7-1, tying it at 23 and 24, but Westside Christian scored the final two points to take the set, 26-24.
Second set
Westside Christian took control early with a 5-0 run to lead 11-3, and Baker couldn’t recover. Westside Christian won the set, 25-8.
Third set
This was a back-and-forth set, with both teams having extended scoring runs.
Westside Christian had the first, with five straight points to lead 5-1. Baker then scored seven straight, including a Rupel kill and a Ramos ace, to lead 8-5. Westside Christian scored six in a row to lead 11-8, but Baker responded with six straight of its own to lead 14-11 and prompt a Westside Christian timeout. Rupel had two aces in the run.
Westside Christian then regained the lead at 18-16 with a 7-2 run.
Baker got back to 19-18 on Ramos’ kill, and tied it at 19 on Rupel’s block. Baker regained the lead at 20-19 on Dalton’s ace serve, and made it 21-19 on Rupel’s kill. After a Westside timeout, Baker won a long rally that included two saves by Sofia Hanson. Ramos’ ace gave Baker a set point at 24-21. Baker closed the set 25-21 on Rupel’s kill.
Vs. Vale
First set
Baker started fast, scoring the first five points on Dalton’s serve. The run included an ace serve and a kill by Rupel.
Baker extended its lead to 9-2 on Rupel’s ace, and after a brief Vale rally, Baker went on to lead 20-8. The Bulldogs had strong defensive play from the back row with Jayden Whitford and libero Lilly Wilson.
Baker closed out the set, 25-13, on a missed Vale serve.
Second set
The set was close early, with ties at 4, 5, 6 and 7. Baker scored six straight points to take a 12-7 lead, and the Bulldogs extended the lead to 19-10. Baker closed out the set, 25-12, on a Vale serve error.
Third set
Baker led 6-2 early but the Vikings rallied to get as close as 10-9. Baker then scored six straight points, including an ace serve from Hanson, to lead 16-9. Baker finished off the set, and the match, 25-14.
Baker vs. Sheridan, bracket play
First set
The score was close throughout, with ties at 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 12, 16, 17, 18 and 20. But after Baker led 21-20 on Taylor Churchfield’s kill, Sheridan scored five of the last six points, including two straight ace serves, to win the set, 25-22.
Second set
Sheridan led throughout, winning the set 25-16 and the match.
Baker played Rainier in its final match of the day.
vs. Rainier
First set
Baker raced to a 6-1 lead, capped by Ramos’ ace serve. Baker extended the lead to 15-5 on Rupel’s kill, and after four straight points by Rainier, Baker scored three straight to regain control. Baker won the set, 25-14.
Second set
Baker tool control of the set with an 11-2 run to go up 15-7. Baker claimed the sweep with a 25-13 win.
Baker JV at Pendleton tournament
The Baker JV team traveled to Pendleton for a tournament on Saturday.
In pool play Baker beat Umatilla, 25-10, 25017, 25-10, and lost to the Elgin varsity, 25-14, 25-14, 25-14.
In bracket play, Baker beat Prairie City, 25-14, 25-14, to advance to the semifinals. There the Bulldogs lost to the Elgin varsity, 25-10, 25-15.
