Firefighters douse two small lightning holdover fires near Granite

Firefighters have controlled two small “holdover” fires, sparked by recent lightning but not detected until later, in the Clear Creek area southwest of Granite.

The Red Boy Fire burned 1.21 acres. Firefighters from the Umatilla and Wallowa-Whitman national forests worked on the blaze Monday, Sept. 23, and Tuesday, Sept. 24, said Christopher Dennis, deputy public affairs officer for the Umatilla National Forest. The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 21.

The fire was near the road leading from Granite to the Fremont Powerhouse.

Crews also controlled the Ruby Creek Fire, which is south of the Olive Lake Road. It burned 0.2 of an acre. It was reported about 4 p.m. on Monday.

On Tuesday about 4:40 p.m., a fire was reported in the China Cap area east of Union. Firefighters responded to the blaze, which burned 0.1 of an acre. The cause was not listed.
