SEASIDE — Baker senior Daniel Brown placed seventh in the boys hard course at the 3 Course Challenge at Seaside on Saturday, Sept. 21, one of the bigger high school cross-country meets in the Northwest.

Brown finished the 5-kilometer course in 18:49.8. Baker’s Jack Joseph was 58th on the hard course, and William Spriet was 61st.

On the girls hard course, Baker senior Sofie Kaaen was the Bulldogs’ top runner, placing 19th. Ruby Heriza was 28th and Liz Timm was 49th.

Baker also had runners competing on the moderate and easy courses, although Baker coach Suzy Cole said those adjectives are somewhat misleading.

“Even though the first course is called easy, it is anything but that,” Cole said. “All three courses had two big mud pits this year and plenty of hills with a wide variety of  terrain. The moderate and the hard course just each have more hills, a longer course and more sand. I was so impressed with how well our new runners performed, as this meet can be very intimidating between the difficulty of the courses and there being 69 teams participating.

“On the girls side of the meet, Ruby Heriza ran a great race on the difficult course,” Cole said. “Daniel Brown continues to have a really strong season placing seventh overall and first in our division. I was super proud of all the kids. We are looking forward to our home meet on Thursday at the Quail Ridge Golf Course.”

The Baker Invitational will start at 2 p.m. with the middle school girls race, followed by middle school boys, high school girls and high school boys, followed by a senior recognition ceremony. Quail Ridge is at 2801 Indiana Ave.
