Lightning starts several new small fires; most contained at less than half an acre

Lightning started several new wildfires on Sunday, Sept. 8, in Northeastern Oregon, but fire crews contained most of the blazes at less than half an acre.

The biggest reported so far, estimated at 15 acres, is in the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area south of Copper Creek in the West Fork Lostine River drainage, north of Minam Lake and about 12 miles south of Joseph. The fire was showing “moderate fire behavior” before a thunderstorm, with rain and hail, passed over the area Sunday afternoon, according to the Blue Mountain Interagency Dispatch Center. Eight firefighters were working on the fire.

Other fires reported Sunday:

• Sheep Creek area, 24 miles southwest of La Grande, 0.1 of an acre, controlled, lightning caused

• Geiser Creek area, 29 miles southwest of Baker City, 0.1 of an acre, contained, lightning caused

• Trout Creek area, 24 miles east of Ukiah, 0.1 of an acre, controlled, lightning caused

• Cabell Meadow, 27 miles west of Baker City, no size or cause listed

• Badger Creek area, 25 miles west of Baker City, 0.1 of an acre, lightning caused

• Rancheria Creek area, 13 miles northeast of Ukiah, 0.1 of an acre, lightning caused

• Hacker Creek area, 13 miles north of La Grande, contained, no size listed

• King Springs, 10 miles northwest of Ontario, 0.24 of an acre, no cause listed

• Bridgeport area south of Dooley Mountain, no size or cause listed
