The Baker boys and the Powder Valley girls won the team titles at the Ray Uriarte Invite track and field meet on Friday, May 3, at Baker High School.

Twenty-three schools competed in the day-long event under sunny skies. Baker placed fifth in the girls meet.

Athletes from Pine Eagle and Huntington also competed.

Baker’s individual champions included Jaron Long in the 800 meters and Rasean Jones, who won both hurdles races. Jones and Long combined with Malaki Myer and Giacomo Rigueiro to win the 4×400 relay.

In the girls meet, Powder Valley’s Ayla Bingham won the long jump, and the Badgers’ Sky Nesser won the high jump. Bingham was second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Pine Eagle’s Ella Randall, defending state champion in the shot put, won the event with a throw of 36 feet, 9.25 inches.

Baker coach Suzy Cole highlighted Jillian Poe’s 3-foot personal record in the triple jump, which makes her the top seed in the Greater Oregon League for the district meet Saturday, May 11 in Pendleton.

“Lillee Henry and Maddy Hassmiller had PR jumps in the long jump, Kayla Crook had PR in the discus, Ruby Heriza had PR’s in both hurdle races, Mary Schwartz had a PR in the 1,500 and Ellie Murphy and Kaylee Gross ran PR’s in the 200,” Cole said. “Sofie Kaaen had a great jumping in the pole vault.”

In the boys meet, Rigueiro ran a PR in the 400, placing second just 0.04 of a second behind the winner.

“Gaige Birmingham also ran his best 400 ever, and also had his best jump on the pole vault,” Cole said. “Jarren Cikanek ran a PR in the 3,000, Ian Brougham ran PRs in both hurdle races, Dillon Multop had a big throw in the shot with a PR barely missing the 40-foot mark, he also threw a PR in the discus. Quin Wellman also threw PR’s in both the shot put and discus. Kade Rudi and Ryder Nimmo also both threw PR’s in the discus. Gabe McBride jumped a PR in the pole vault. In the long jump Hudson Spike had a PR by 10 inches.

“We also had many other athletes that did not necessarily get PR’s but competed very tough,” Cole said. “We are looking forward to the districts this Saturday. We also want to thank the many volunteers who helped with this meet, we couldn’t do it without them.”
