Former Baker City resident, 1928-2019

Marjorie Jean Masterson, 90, of La Grande and formerly of Baker City, died March 28, 2019, at Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5, at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center in La Grande. There will be a graveside service afterward at 2 p.m. at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland.

Marjorie was born on Aug. 13, 1928, at Baker City to Herbert and Sybil (Carpenter) Hunt. She was educated at Baker, graduating with the Class of 1946 before attending Eastern Oregon College where she earned a degree in secretarial science.

She was married on June 5, 1949, at Baker City to Norman Masterson. The couple lived at Ontario, Corvallis, South Twin Lakes and on Government Island in the middle of the Columbia River before returning to Corvallis and then moving to La Grande.

Marjorie worked in clerical and secretarial jobs until her children were born. She then was a full-time mom.

She enjoyed bowling, gardening, flowers, canning fruit, baking (especially cobblers), fishing and traveling.

Survivors include her sons, Mark of La Grande and Glen and his wife, Nancy, of Arcadia, Michigan; a sister, Dorothy Hunt of La Grande; two grandchildren, Austin and Emily; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

‘Stew’ Allen

Halfway, 1951-2019

Stewart “Stew” Allen, 67, of Halfway, died on March 19, 2019, at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

A celebration of Stew’s life will take place during the summer, with the date, time and place to be announced later.

Stewart Wayne Allen was born on May 15, 1951, at Portland. He attended Sellwood Grade School and Cleveland High in Portland, graduating in 1968. He married Laura Erickson and they had two children together, Jeremy and Travis.

During his life, he worked three years for the city of Portland. He operated his own business, Allen’s Lighting, from 1979 to 2003. In 2016, he and his son Jeremy started S & J Automotive in Halfway. Their work ethic and knowledge kept them busy year round and sent them on many memorable “rescue missions.” Stew’s favorite thing to say was “Jeremy!!! Get back to work!!”

Stew enjoyed hunting, fishing and drag racing. His favorite sports teams were the Portland Trail Blazers and the San Francisco 49ers. Not surprisingly he loved the color red. His special pets were Meg and Whinnie and memorable times during Stew’s life were the birth of his two children. Stew was always willing to do anything at the drop of a hat for you, or give you the shirt off of his back if you asked.

Stew is survived by his sons, Jeremy Allen of Halfway, and Travis Allen of Vancouver, Washington; his sister, Carol Allen of Molalla; and his nieces, DeeDee and Dawn Marie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Elaine Woolf

Halfway, 1953-2019

Elaine Woolf, 65, of Halfway, died on March 26, 2019, at her home, surrounded by family.

Her memorial service will take place May 25 at 11 a.m. at Pine Valley Presbyterian Church in Halfway.

Celin Elaine was born on Nov. 20, 1953, just minutes before her twin, to Albert and Beulah (Buchanan) Crow. She was raised in Halfway, attending Pine Valley Grade School and Pine Valley High School, graduating in 1972. Daryl and Elaine were married on Nov. 22, 1990. Elaine brought to the marriage two sons, Jerrod and Travis.

During her life, she worked at numerous places, waitressing and bartending. She enjoyed doing crafts as a hobby and loved roses and spring. Elaine was a really good cook, she made things from scratch, that tasted delicious (she’d throw everything in but the kitchen sink) and it could not be copied.

Elaine’s favorite saying was “beep..beep…beep get ‘er done.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Travis; her sisters, Rose Lindstrom, Melba Harrington, Marline Vancourt, and Betty Wells; and her brother, Marion Crow.

Elaine is survived by her sons, Jerrod Crow and his wife, Angie, of Waitsburg, Washington, and Joe Bukowiec; her stepdaughters, Kathryn Woolf, Debbie Woolf, Kimberly Brock, Bobby Nelson and Ginger Sellness; her stepsons, Robert and Richard Woolf; her brothers, Dick, Dave and John Crow; her sisters, Louise Tyler and Lorraine Gunter; 30 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
