The Baker boys finished first, and the girls tied with Vale for first, in a three-team track and field meet Tuesday, May 6, at BHS.

Ontario was the third team.

The Baker boys had 78 points. Vale was second with 52, Ontario third with 18.

On the girls side, Baker and Vale tied with 69 points. Ontario had 5.

Baker had many individual winners.

In girls events, Sammy Gressley won the 200 meters and long jump, Gwen Rasmussen won the 800 and 3,000, Meren Jesenko won the 300 hurdles, Kate Norton won the shot put and javelin, and Ellie Murphy won the high jump. Baker’s 4×100 relay team of Claire Bachman, Meren Jesenko, Sammy Gressley and Molly Rasmussen won their race.

For boys, Rasean Jones won the 400 meters and javelin, William Spriet won the 800, Jack Joseph won the 110 hurdles, Henry Gaslin won the high jump, and Kane Hellberg won the long jump and triple jump. Baker’s 4×400 relay team of Ian Brougham, Gavin Combs, Bryson Petrucci and Wayland Thomas was first.

Gressley, a junior, has been threatening multiple school records this spring.

Her time in the 100 on Tuesday, 12.52 seconds, was the third-fastest in school history. Gressley also has the second-fastest time in the event, 12.46 seconds, set at the Kiwanis Twilight Invitational May 2. Lynne Edmonson set the record of 12.30 in 1973.

Gressley’s time Tuesday in the 200, 25.77 seconds, ranks second in the BHS record book. Tish Henes, who went on to compete for the University of Oregon, holds the record of 25.50 seconds, set in 1995.

Gressley’s long jump winning leap of 16 feet, 8.5 inches ranks third all-time. Jill Wood set the record in 1991 at 17-0.5. Jill Richards is second with a 16-9 jump in 2007.

Baker freshman thrower Kate Norton has also come close to a BHS record this spring.

Norton’s shot put throw of 41 feet, 2.75 inches at the Wayne Invitational on April 4 is just a quarter inch short of Sarah Cotton’s record of 41-3, set in 1997.

Norton also ranks second in the discus, with a best throw of 112 feet, 8 inches at the Kiwanis Twilight Invitational. Deb Spivey set the record in 1977 at 132-8.

Junior Rasean Jones, who has four individual school records — 110 and 300 hurdles, long jump and 400 meters — and shares the 4×400 relay record, has climbed the record book in the 100 and 200 sprints as well.

Jones’ 10.84 time in the 100 at the Carnival of Speed on April 25 ranks second, behind Talon Jayo’s 10.74 set in 2004.

Jones ran 22.49 in the 200 at the Carnival of Speed, which is third all-time, behind Jayo’s 22.44 in 2004, and Larry Derrick’s 22.10, set in 1965.
