Baker junior Rasean Jones is renowned for his prowess in the two hurdles races, but he can also jump pretty far when there’s no obstacle in his way except a pit of sand.

Jones, the two-time defending Class 4A state champion in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles races, broke a 65-year-old Baker High School in the long jump during a four-school meet at Vale on Tuesday, April 15.

And it wasn’t even close.

Jones leaped 23 feet, 5.75 inches to win the event at Vale High School. The previous record, set in 1960 by John Thompson, was 21 feet, 11 inches.

Jones took the day off from competing in the hurdles races.

Baker finished second as a team in both the girls and boys meets. Ontario and Nyssa were the two other schools competing.
