- Local law enforcement are maintaining regular patrols in Baker City and Baker County during the coronavirus crisis.
Baker City Police have arrested three male juveniles who are suspects in multiple burglaries of Baker City businesses.
Police didn’t name the juveniles, who were arrested on Thursday, Jan. 23, and taken to a detention center in The Dalles.
The investigation continues, and more arrests are expected, according to a press release from Baker City Police Sgt. Wayne Chastain. Police have at least one other suspect, also a male juvenile, Chastain said in an interview Thursday morning.
According to a press release from the police department, police were “able to develop three suspects based on evidence they obtained from multiple scenes.”
Chastain said on Thursday morning that the evidence included video from cameras near the businesses, although the cameras weren’t part of the affected businesses’ security systems.
The juveniles are charged with second-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit second-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, first- and second-degree theft, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm.
According to the press release, the initial case happened at Gas ‘N Snack, 2212 10th St., where two male juveniles broke into the business on or around Jan. 8, took an undisclosed amount of merchandise and caused damage to the building exceeding $1,000.
Starting Jan. 21, police began receiving complaints from multiple businesses about burglaries. Between Jan. 20 and Jan. 22, suspects:
• Broke out a store window at Baker City Vape Shop, 1820 First St., causing over $1,000 in damage. This was reported at 8:31 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, according to the police dispatch log.
• Broke into the High Mountain Smoke Shop, 2658 10th St., took more than $1,000 in merchandise and caused well over $1,000 in damage. This was reported at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, according to the police dispatch log.
• Broke into Straight Edge Tony’s barber shop at 2000 Broadway St., and took property valued at $240. The suspects also damaged the property. This was reported at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, according to the police dispatch log.
• A report of a gun stolen from a vehicle in the 2500 block of Fourth St.
Police recovered some of the stolen items, including the gun, according to the press release.
Chastain said police, while investigating the Jan. 20-22 break-ins, connected those to the Jan. 8 burglary at Gas ‘N Snack, in which two of the three arrested suspects were allegedly involved.
