Marla’s Mall helps students, community

Marla's Mall, located at Baker High School, accepts clean, gently used donations on Mondays. Needed items are winter clothing, shoes and men's clothes.

Melody Webb is grateful for the coat drives and donations that fill the racks at Marla’s Mall — contributions that help about 400 people every month.

“I’m so very thankful for the generosity of the community,” she said.

Webb is the business coordinator for student-led businesses at Baker High School, including Marla’s Mall, a secondhand shop that offers items free to students and their families, in addition to community members.

The store is named in honor of Marla Cavallo, a BHS teacher who died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 45. Her classroom provided a space to store clothing for students in need, and now the project that honors her has grown into a full-fledged thrift store that also provides work experience for students.

Marla’s Mall is in a building just west of the Baker High gymnasium, between the student parking lot and Baker Technical Institute. To get there, access the parking lot at the corner of Ninth and G streets, on the north side of Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

Hours

Marla’s Mall is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for lunch.

The hours may differ when the school has assemblies or a special schedule — to confirm it is open, call 541-524-2309.

The shop will be closed for winter break starting Dec. 20. It will reopen Jan. 6.

Shoppers are limited to one bag per month, Webb said.

Donations

Donations are accepted on Mondays. Webb said the most needed items now are winter clothes — hats, coats, heavy socks and snow gear. She said three coat drives helped boost the stock this fall, but she’s already given away 200 coats.

Also, the store can always use men’s clothing and shoes.

“Especially tennis shoes for kids,” she said.

She’s also seen a need for household items, such as dishes and sheets.

Donations should be clean and in good condition.
