BAKER FOOTBALL: Bulldogs roll past Marshfield to even record at 1-1

The Baker football team traveled to Redmond Friday night, Sept. 13, and the Bulldogs rolled past Marshfield 41-20 to even their season record at 1-1.

The game was played at Redmond High School to shorten the travel distance for both teams. Marshfield is in Coos Bay.

Junior wide receiver Rasean Jones had four touchdowns, three on passes from Jake McClaughry and one on a 65-yard run late in the game.

The Bulldogs, who lost 55-28 to Scappoose in their season opener on Sept. 6 at home, led the Pirates 27-14 at halftime.

In the first half Jones had two touchdown catches from Jake McClaughry, of 19 and 1 yards, and McClaughry had two running touchdowns, from 1 and 2 yards out.

Baker boosted its lead to 34-14 after McClaughry found Jones behind the defense for an 80-yard touchdown pass with 10 minutes left in the game.

Marshfield responded with its first points of the second half, scoring a touchdown with 8:50 left in the game to cut Baker’s lead to 34-20. The two-point conversion try failed.

Marshfield then recovered an onside kick, but Baker’s defense held.

Jones then finished off the Pirates with a 72-yard pass from McClaughry for his fourth touchdown of the game with a little more 2 minutes left. The extra point gave Baker a 41-20 lead.

Marshfield outgained Baker, 451 total yards to 414, but the Bulldogs converted seven of 14 third downs while stopping the Pirates on all eight third downs, and on six of eight fourth-down plays.

Both teams had one turnover.

McClaughry was 19 of 33 passing for 366 yards and four touchdowns. He also led Baker in rushing with 24 yards on nine carries.

Jones had 13 catches for 261 yards. Logan Crawford had two catches for 64 yards, Hayden Churchfield had one reception for 24 yards, and Connor Martin, John Garcia and Daniel Maldonado each had one catch.

Defensively, Jones led Baker with nine tackles, including one for a loss. Churchfield had five tackles, including one for a loss, and Crawford had four stops.

Baker travels to Vale on Friday, Sept. 20, to take on the Class 3A Vikings at 6 p.m. PDT. Vale is 3-0, including wins over Baker’s Greater Oregon League rivals in La Grande (30-8) and Ontario (62-10).
