Baker County Weed District offers free herbicide

Published 6:21 am Tuesday, May 7, 2024

The Baker County Weed District is offering free herbicide at several places in the county starting in May and continuing through the summer and into early fall.

Money for the herbicide comes from the county’s property tax levy for noxious weed control.

Unlike previous years, when the county gave away a blend of herbicides designed to treat particular weeds, including the common whitetop, this year the district is offering a full-strength herbicide in labeled, sealed containers.

Residents who don’t know the species of weed on their property can bring a sample of the plant, or a photograph, to one of the giveaway sites for identification. Those who bring a plant should carry it in a bag to avoid potential spreading of seeds.

Those picking up herbicide will need to fill out a form, and district officials will supply the herbicide and instructions for mixing and applying the product.

The district also has a program in which the county and landowners share the cost of controlling weeds, and landowners who participate in that cost-share program might not be able to also receive free herbicide.

Supplies are limited, and the following schedule is subject to change.
