- The Avenue of Flags involves placing 450 large flags along the roads at Mount Hope Cemetery and thousands of smaller flags on the graves of Elks members and veterans.
Baker City’s cemetery maintenance contractor, HnT Lawn care, will start the annual spring cleanup at Mount Hope Cemetery on April 8.
The city is asking residents to remove flowers and other decorative items from graves no later than April 7. Removing those items temporarily makes it easier for workers to edge, thatch, fertilize and do other work at the cemetery.
The contractor will collect decorations that remain after April 7. Ones in good condition will be stored at the cemetery until claimed by a resident, or Nov. 1, 2024. Perishable items will be discarded.
Items that comply with the city’s cemetery rules can be returned to graves starting April 23. A copy of the rules is available at www.bakercity.com. Allowed items include flowers, both natural and artificial, American flags no taller than 3 feet, and plant hangers that are no taller than 6 feet and that are “immediately adjacent to and touching the headstone.”
More information is available by calling the city at 541-524-2047 or 541-524-2046.
