Open houses set for Blue Mountain forest plan revision process

The U.S. Forest Service is working to revise the management plans for the three national forests in the Blue Mountains — Wallowa-Whitman, Malheur and Umatilla.

The three national forests in the Blue Mountains have scheduled a series of public meetings during April to gather public comments about the ongoing process to revise the long-term management plans for the forests.

The Wallowa-Whitman, Umatilla and Malheur national forests are updating the management plans that date to 1990.

Management plans list the general goals for each forest but do not involve specific projects, such as timber sales or recreation improvements. Site-specific projects are analyzed separately in a public process through the National Environmental Policy Act.

The Blue Mountain national forests are in the second of the 10 steps for revising forest plans under a 2012 federal rule, according to a press release from the Forest Service.

The second, or assessment phase, is designed to gather information about forest conditions and trends.

“The Forest Service is eager to hear input on individual and community values,” according to the press release. “Public involvement will help the Forest Service gain local knowledge about existing forest conditions to help shape the draft assessment. A formal public comment period will occur later in the ten-step process.”

All meetings will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be in-person meetings as well as a virtual option for people who can’t attend at the venue. A draft report about current conditions on the national forests is available at www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1169683.pdf.
