The book "Andy and Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure" teaches children about Rotary Club and its four-way test. The Baker City Rotary Club bought books for fourth graders in the Baker School District.

Members of the Baker City Rotary Club visited fourth-grade classrooms during the past month to share a story that introduces students to the club and its mission.

The book, titled “Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure,” uses a fictional story to teach Rotary’s Four-Way Test:

  • Is it the truth?
  • Is it fair to all concerned?
  • Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The club used a grant from the Rotary district, along with locally raised money, to buy 225 books, bookmarks and posters for the classrooms.

Rotarians read the book and gave out copies to fourth graders at Haines, North Powder, Keating, South Baker Intermediate, Harvest Christian Academy, Baker Adventist Christian School, and the Mennonite school in Haines.

They also donated a copy of the book to each school library.

Rotary has seven areas of focus, said Ken Krohn, current president of the Baker City club.

“Each area of focus leads to peace,” he said.

Those areas are:

  • Promoting peace
  • Fighting disease
  • Providing clean water
  • Saving mothers and children
  • Supporting education
  • Growing local economies
  • Protecting the environment

Krohn said the club still has copies of the book, and would like to connect with homeschool families. For information, send a message through the club’s Facebook page.

Support

The Baker City Rotary Club has several fundraisers that fund projects such as these books, as well as scholarships, the annual Easter egg hunt, literacy programs and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.

The club has two main fundraisers. One is coming up in July, when the club sells buffalo burgers at Geiser-Pollman Park during Miners Jubilee.

The other fundraiser is the flag program. Individuals or businesses can purchase a subscription for $45 a year and Rotarians will place a flag on seven days throughout the year. For information, or to participate, send a message through the club’s Facebook page.
