A Baker City man who was on probation yelled profanities at Baker County Circuit Court Judge Matt Shirtcliff after the judge sentenced him to 28 months in state prison on Friday, June 21, at the Baker County Courthouse.
Cory D. Deshirlia, 47, was held in contempt for his comments to Shirtcliff, who sentenced him to 30 days in the Baker County Jail for the contempt charge, that sentence consecutive to the prison term for the probation violation, according to a press release from District Attorney Greg Baxter.
Deshirlia was on probation for a felony strangulation conviction that resulted from a domestic violence incident on Jan. 31, 2022.
Shirtcliff described Deshirlia as a danger to others, and sentenced him to 28 months in state prison.
Deshirlia, who appeared by video, asked for permission to address the judge, and Deshirlia followed with what Baxter described as a “profane outburst.”
Baxter, chief deputy district attorney Michael Spaulding and probation officer Debbi Wray handled the case for the state.
According to court records, Deshirlia assaulted his girlfriend in Huntington in January 2022. She told police that Deshirlia, over a period of about three days, had slapped her in the face, smashed her face against a wall, threw her over a reclining chair and put his hands on her throat and over her mouth.
He pleaded guilty to one count of strangulation in April 2023 and was sentenced to 36 months of probation. Seven other counts, including second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, menacing and coercion, were dismissed in a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office.
The sentence stated that if Deshirlia’s probation was revoked, he would be sentenced to 28 months in prison.
