Human-caused fire burns 64 acres near Ukiah; 80% contained

UKIAH — About 60 firefighters are working on a human-caused blaze that has burned about 64 acres near Ukiah on the Umatilla National Forest.

The Skull fire, about 5 miles southeast of Ukiah near Drift Fence Campground, is about 80% contained as of Friday afternoon, July 5.

There are no road closures or evacuations at this time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Umatilla National Forest appreciates other agencies, including the Oregon Department of Forestry, that helped with initial attack on the fire, which was reported about 11:30 a.m. on July 4.

Five engines, two water tenders, one helicopter, four rappellers, two crews and a type three incident management team are assigned to the fire. Fire managers will continually assess resource needs based on fire spread and behavior, with hot, dry and occasionally windy weather forecast over the weekend.
