Rechelle June Arnold, 49, a former Baker City resident, died Sept. 4, 2010, at her home in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2625 Hughes Lane. There will be a reception afterward at the church. There will be a celebration of Rechelle’s life potluck reception at 2 p.m. at the Baker Elks Lodge, 1896 Second St.

Rechelle was born on May 3, 1961, at Salem to Wanda I. Moyes and Richard L. Arnold. She was raised at Baker City.

Growing up she was heavily involved in Girl Scouts, swim team, and band. She loved music, concerts, dancing, skiing and the Elkhorn Mountain Range.

Having fallen in love with architecture from watching “The Brady Bunch” television show, she turned her focus to classes that would get her there throughout her grade school years.

She was a 1979 Baker High School graduate and attended the University of Oregon at Eugene where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1985.

During school summer breaks, she worked for the U.S. Forest Service on the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area team.

After graduating, she followed all of the Ducks football and basketball games, and attending when possible. Rechelle was an avid follower of the Oakland Raiders, Portland Trail Blazers and NASCAR Racing. Jeff Gordon was her favorite driver. She loved NASCAR so much, that she was the secretary of a Sacramento NASCAR fan club.

Rechelle worked for California State University at Sacramento for 13 years in the Facilities Management Department where she used her expertise to maintain campus buildings.

Rechelle was best known for her radiant smile and her boisterous laugh and thoughtful heart, family members said. She was always there to lend an ear or to help anyone in need. The Make A Wish Foundation and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Survivors include her mother, Wanda Smith; her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Craig Davis; nephew, Daniel Drake; brother, Ken “Josh” Smith, and friend, Alice Cole, and niece, Kendra Smith; and many aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; her father; and Pete, her beloved dog.

Jackie Garrett

Jackie Orin Garrett, 67, a longtime Baker City resident, died Sept. 13, 2010, at his home in Boise surrounded by his loved ones.

His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, 2107 Third St. There will be a graveside service at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family for a memorial dinner afterward at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 2005 Valley Ave.

Jackie was born on June 25, 1943, at Harriman, Tenn, along with his identical twin, Jimmie Owen, to Harlin L. and Mayme T. Garrett. The family packed up, and moved to south Baker City in 1951, after the logging boom.

Jackie worked in Alaska for Catco during the 1970s through the 1980s while building his family in Baker City. For more than 20 years he was one of the partners of his family run company Garrett Investment Logging, formerly Poorboy, for many years. He was the equipment operator and a catskinner, and was partial to his D-6 Cat.

After beginning his fight with COPD Jack “retired” and spent many years caretaking a ranch in Durkee, along with actively operating the family owned Bratton Springs Water Co.

He could not be slowed down, as he packed his oxygen tank up on the tractor to feed the cattle, or threw it in his pickup truck next to him when he went elk hunting. You could spot him by his John Deere cap, flannel shirt, cup of coffee, portable oxygen tank and a smile.

Jackie had the unmistakable Garrett laugh, and no matter what the situation, could find a way to make fun of it, his family members said. He loved the woods and being outdoors and was most content when he was looking at timber sales, hunting, fishing or just exploring.

He also loved his church family and was known to whisper jokes and comments during the quietest part of service and, with an elbow nudge, would have everyone laughing. He was a productive member of the stewardship committee at Calvary Baptist and was involved in some major renovations that the congregation still enjoys today.

Jackie also loved his family and it was a big blended family, but he found room in his heart for everyone. He found particular joy in his grandkids and always kept Hershey kisses close by and they lovingly called him “Grandpa Candy.”

He loved going to his grandchildren’s events, whether it be a football, basketball, volleyball, baseball game or a track meet. He was one of their biggest fans at Stock shows and fairs, and had many supportive ideas about showing horses and hogs.

To his brothers and nephews who worked on the slope he was known as “Crowbar.” To everyone he was known as a wonderful man who brought joy and laughter where ever he went, family members said.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen Garrett; his sons, Jeff Garrett, and his wife, KayT Garrett, and Richard Garrett; his daughters and their spouses, Kristina and Jeff Horn, Marleaux and Bruce Scaggs and Tammy and Gordon Goodale; his stepchildren, Jason Bennett, Justin and Mica Bennett and Jeanine and Aristeo Gabiola; his siblings, Ray and Mary Anne Garrett, Bobby and Kate Garrett, John and Marge Garrett, Thelma Elliot, Ken and Arlene Garrett, Debra Garrett and Amber and Doug Emery; his grandchildren, Sky Lynn Garrett, Nick Martin, Justine Martin, Meghan Martin, Jordan Horn, Havana Garrett, Jonah Garrett, Leyton Garrett, Kayla Kirby, Audrey Kirby, Cody Kirby, Jackie Kirby, Nycole Gabiola, Aristeo Gabiola, Cindy Bennett, Michele Bennett, Brian Bennett; great-grandchildren, Hazel Garrett, Alex Garrett, Dylan Hallett and Seamus Jackie Martin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harlin L. Garrett; his mother, Mayme T. Garrett; his brothers, Clifford Garrett and Jimmy Garrett; his sisters, Euna Faye and Hank McAdams and Lenny Rasmussen.
