Two members of the Baker County Sheriff’s Office’s search and rescue team helped a Huntington couple whose pickup truck got stuck in about a foot of snow in the Rye Valley area southeast of Durkee on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The two members responded to a report of people stranded in the snow who weren’t dressed for winter weather and were unable to build a fire. The call, from Derek Rafferty, 55, came in at about 8:35 p.m. He told the dispatcher that he and his partner, Monica Rafferty, 55, were trying to walk out after their truck was stranded.

The rescuers drove to the area in a side-by-side equipped with tracks. Along the Mormon Basin Road they found a man who was also trying to find the couple but was unable to get to the area due to snow.

The rescuers drove about 5 miles before finding the Raffertys. They had walked about 5 miles and were cold but otherwise in good shape.

The search and rescue members brought the couple to where the other man was waiting to take them home.
