NAMPA, Idaho — The Baker/Powder Valley girls and boys wrestling teams competed at one of the larger events in the region, the Rollie Lane Invitational, on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 5-6.
In the girls tournament, Marli Lind won six of seven matches, beating Gracin Dennis of Emmett, Idaho, in the third-place match to earn 28 team points.
Madison Meyer placed sixth, going 3-3 in her matches to earn 11 team points.
Lilly Collins went 4-2 at 138 pounds to earn 11 team points. Marrissa Weston scored six team points, Oakley Anderson scored three team points and Kylie Martin earned one point.
Baker/Powder Valley tied for 21st with Vale, amassing 60 points. There were 74 teams in the tournament, coach Josh Anderson said.
He applauded Lind for avenging a close loss, by 7-4 decision, to Emmett’s Gracin Dennis in the quarterfinals, beating Dennis for third place.
“She did really well to make it to third, five pins out of six wins,” Anderson said.
Lilly Collins overcame an ankle injury sustained during practice on Thursday, winning four of six matches.
“She had a really good two days of tournament and she was dominant in those (wins),” Anderson said. “A side note, in her career she holds the top with 55 wins, the current win leader for the Bulldog girls.”
Madison Meyer had to forfeit the fifth-place match due to an injured back, but she came back to win two matches by decision earlier in the event.
“She toughed through it, never giving up, coming back and beating those girls,” Anderson said. “We’ll get her healthy.”
Anderson said the 10 girls who wrestled in the tournament are all continuing to improve.
The Bulldogs will compete in the Jaybird tournament at Nampa Jan. 12-13.
Boys
On the boys side, Aldo Duran won three of five matches at 120 pounds to earn nine team points.
Marcus Chamberlain earned seven points at 126 pounds, going 2-2, Nolan Briels was 2-2 at 138 and won five team points, and Riley Martin was 2-2 at 152 pounds, winning four team points. Andrew Sandberg was 1-2 at 285 pounds and won four team points.
“It was the largest Rollie Lane tournament ever,” Baker coach Jeris Stephens said, with 88 boys teams from Oregon, Idaho, Washington, California, Wyoming and Colorado.
“Very, very tough competition, toughest competition we’ve gone to all year long,” he said. “Just under 1,500 kids there.”
Duran was the only Bulldog to advance to the second day, when he suffered his first two losses of the season after winning his first 12 matches.
Stephens said the size of the tournament also meant there was a 4-pound variance on weight classes, meaning his crew was up against opponents as much as one weight class above usual, and despite that still wrestled well.
“They’re all showing good promise as far as where I’d like them to be by the end of the season, and it’s coming to a head a lot quicker than people realize,” Stephens said. “I would love to give kudos to the coaching staff, they’ve been a blessing to me this year. Chris Price stepped in and filled the void left when Kyle Hamman left, and filled that void very, very well, kids responded very well to him.”
The Bulldogs will compete in the Oregon Classic Jan. 12-13 at Redmond.
