The quarterfinal round of the boys Class 1A state basketball tournament at Baker High School started with a blowout and ended with another on Thursday, March 6.

But the two games between were both overtime thrillers.

Top-seeded Mannahouse Academy of Portland, and second seed Crane, the three-time defending state champion, both breezed to wins.

Mannahouse, which moved down from Class 2A this season after finishing third in the 2024 state tournament, dominated Dufur 64-28 in the first quarterfinal Thursday afternoon.

Crane also cruised, scoring 54 points in the first half en route to an 84-37 win over Days Creek in the final quarterfinal Thursday night.

The third and fourth seeds didn’t fare as well.

Third-seeded Nixyaawii went to overtime against Country Christian.

Country Christian outscored the Golden Eagles 13-5 in the extra period for a 91-83 win. The combined 174 points was 14 points shy of the tournament record set in 1990 when Butte Falls beat Christ’s Center, 99-89.

Sherman, the fourth seed, also went down in similarly dramatic fashion to North Douglas.

The Huskies forced overtime on Isaiah Riggs’ 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1 second on the clock.

But North Douglas held on 50-48 to advance to the semifinals.

Thursday’s slate started with the two girls consolation semifinal games.

Country Christian beat Echo 57-41 in the first game.

Peyton Craven led Country Christian with 21 points, including 11 of 14 free throws. Cara Mulhern added 12 points.

Kenzie Hendrix led Echo with 14 points.

Country Christian will play for fourth place on Saturday, March 8, at 8 a.m. against North Douglas, which held off North Clackamas Christian 43-38 in the other consolation semifinal.

Brooklyn Cyr had 26 points to lead North Douglas, including five 3-pointers.

Keslynn Turner had 20 points to lead North Clackamas Christian. Her twin sister, Kaylee, scored 13.

Mannahouse Academy 64, Dufur 28
Mannahouse never trailed against the Rangers.

Mattias Tonning scored 22 points to lead Mannahouse. Nolan Schweiss added 12 points and Joshua Louka was also in double figures with 10.

Jacob Kent led Dufur with seven points.

Mannahouse held the Rangers to 26% shooting.

North Douglas 50, Sherman 48, overtime
The game was close throughout, but especially in the fourth quarter as the teams exchange the lead five times.

After Hunter Vaughn’s free throw gave North Douglas a 46-43 lead with 15 seconds left, Riggs swished a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to force overtime. It was his only 3-point attempt in the game.

Both teams struggled in the extra period. North Douglas was 1 for 7 from the field, and Sherman 1 for 3.

After Jamie Phelps scored with 3:22 left to give Sherman a 48-46 lead, the Huskies didn’t score again.

Vaughan made a layin with 2:18 left to tie it at 48, and he made the game-winning free throws with 4 seconds left.

Sherman’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was off target.

Jayden Montgomery led North Douglas with 26 points. Vaughn scored 23 points.

Riggs led Sherman with 26 points. Phelps added 14.

Country Christian 91, Nixyaawii 83, overtime
This was a back-and-forth quarterfinal, with Country Christian leading after the first quarter, Nixyaawii regaining the lead at halftime and Country Christian surging ahead after three quarters, 57-53.

Country Christian continued to lead for the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, until Sun Schimmel’s jumper gave Nixyaawii a 65-63 lead with 5:12 left.

Country Christian’s Tyson Smith, who led all scorers with 37 points, answered with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to regain the lead at 68-64 with 3:41 left.

But the Golden Eagles retook the lead at 69-68 on Rylen Bronson’s two free throws with 2:35 left.

Smith’s basket tied it at 73 with 1:23 left. Bronson scored with 58 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles a 75-73 advantage, but Country Christian’s Danyon Schneider converted a conventional three-point play with 39 seconds left to regain the lead at 76-75. Smith’s two free throws with 21 seconds left boosted the lead to 78-75.

Nixyaawii’s Weptas Brockie nailed a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to tie the score yet again.

Bronson was fouled trying a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, but he missed the free throws, two of which went in and out.

Smith opened the scoring in overtime with his seventh 3-pointer, and the Cougars never trailed again. Smith made four free throws, and Hayden Hernandez two, in the final 1:13.

Bronson led Nixyaawii with 25 points. Symon Picard and Brockie had 18 each, and Schimmel added 11.

Crane 84, Days Creek 37
After the dramatic conclusions to the two previous game, Thursday’s final quarterfinal was an altogether different matter.

Crane, seeking to win its fourth straight state title, scored the first basket and was in control almost from the start

The Mustangs’ offense was dominant, as they shot 60.5% from the field, including 7 of 12 from 3-point range, in the first half. Casse Roozeboom was 4 for 4 from long range and scored 14 points as Crane led 54-19 at halftime. Cody Siegner led Crane with 17 points in the first two quarters.

Siegner finished with 31 points on 14 of 19 shooting from the field. Roozeboom had 20 points and Josh Zander 14.

Aiden Denson led Days Creek with 13 points. Trenton Ladd added 10.
