Frankly, I’m concerned about the city council’s role selecting a new city manager. Considering, some of the same individuals responsible for the loss of our EMT services, $1 million budget shortfall, and them proposing a $10 “safety fee” on our water bill to compensate for their shortsightedness.

I recommend the establishment of a city manager appointment committee to hire the next city manager of Baker City. Committee to include city council members, residents, business owners, and individuals with city budget and/or prior city planning experience. This then aligns with Baker City goals.

Furthermore, the recent removal of Mayor Calder by Councilmen Guyer, Diaz, Waggoner and Hodgdon raises ongoing red flags. I have found no legitimate basis for their covert behavior. The councilmen acted in violation of Baker City Council rules, which have been in effect since 1952 and were last updated in 2020.

According to the City Charter, “the council chooses the mayor at the first regular meeting following each biennial general election, selecting from its members.” The Councilmen had no authority to replace Mayor Calder.

Resolution No. 3934, Baker City, Oregon, Council Rules and Procedures, emphasizes that “council members must always act in the public interest.” Replacing an experienced mayor with an amateur does not serve our best interests at all!

It is very important to note that the public is entitled to comment on all matters before the council that require a vote. Regrettably, this protocol was not followed by the councilmen during the meeting.

Replacing Mayor Calder with two inexperienced individuals has achieved a majority council, depriving Baker City of leadership with a deep understanding of city procedures and consistent prioritization of the city’s best interests.

I urge the citizens of Baker City to attend upcoming city council meetings. Let us stand up for what is best for Baker City!

In the words of Mark Twain, “Always do what is right. It will gratify half of mankind and astound the other.”
