HAINES — An accidental fire destroyed a Haines home on Thursday, May 1, according to Oregon State Police.

The OSP arson unit was requested by the Haines Fire District and the state fire marshal’s office to help investigate the fire at 1016 Cole St., according to the report.

Investigators determined that the home’s lone occupany, Roberta Esther Stehle, 59, was cooking on her stovetop when she fell asleep. She woke and saw flames near the stove. She tried to douse the fire but was forced to flee the home due to smoke, according to the report.

Stehle was not hurt. The home was a total loss, according to the report.
