BAKER/POWDER VALLEY BASEBALL: Bulldogs rout Ontario 11-1 in both games of doubleheader

Jake McClaughry threw a no-hitter in the first game and hit a double and a triple as the Baker/Powder Valley baseball team routed Ontario 11-1 in the first game of a Greater Oregon League doubleheader Friday, April 25, at the Sports Complex.

Then the Bulldogs duplicated the feat in the nightcap with another 11-1 win, as starter Colby Capon and reliever Logan Crawford combined to limit the Tigers to a single run.

Baker improved to 9-7 overall and evened their league record at 3-3.

First game

McClaughry dominated the Tigers’ lineup, striking out the side in the first and setting them down in order in the third and fourth innings.

The Tigers actually scored first, scoring a single run in the second after a walk and two passed balls.

But the Bulldogs took the lead for good in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally.

Aldo Duran singled, Logan Crawford drew a walk and Talon Gyllenberg singled to shortstop to score Duran.

Aggressive baserunning then netted Baker two more runs, as Gyllenberg and Crawford both scored.

Baker extended the lead to 6-1 with three runs in the third.

McClaughry led off with a double, and courtesy runner Gerik Orzsulak scored on Jaxon Logsdon’s triple to center field.

Zane Morgan drove in Logsdon with a sacrifice fly, and Ethan Fletcher, who singled, scored on an error.

Baker added three more runs in the fourth. again rallying with two outs.

After Gyllenberg singled with one out and scored on a passed ball, McClaughry laced a triple to right field.

Morgan than drove in two runs with a double.

Baker closed the game by 10-run rule in the fifth on Sage Joseph’s two-run single to score Crawford, who had singled, and Duran, who had walked.

Second game

Baker led from the start, as Morgan’s sacrifice fly gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after one inning.

John Garcia’s RBI single made it 2-0 in the second, and Garcia drove in two more runs with a single in the third.

Gyllenberg’s two-run double in the fifth gave Baker a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Joseph led off with a walk, and McClaughry singled to move Joseph to third. After Logsdon was intentionally walked, Baker drew four straight walks — by Morgan, Fletcher, Clay Stevens and Garcia — to score four runs and end the game by 10-run rule.

Capon, who pitched 3.1 innings, struck out five. Crawford struck out four.

Baker’s defense was stellar all day, as the Bulldogs didn’t commit an error in the two games.

Baker is off until Friday, May 2, when La Grande comes to the Sports Complex for a key league doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
