BAKER/POWDER VALLEY TENNIS: Bulldogs win 6 of 8 matches against Nyssa; boys finish fourth at Madras tournament

The Baker/Powder Valley tennis teams won six of eight matches against Nyssa on Tuesday, April 8, at the Ash Grove courts near Baker High School.
There were fewer matches than usual due to the number of players Nyssa brought.
Baker swept the girls matches.
In singles, Liz Timm rallied to beat Hadee Wagstaff, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in a match that lasted more than two hours.
In doubles, Kaitlyn Schwin and Olivia Jacoby beat Courtney Carlton and Leyla Castillo, 6-2, 6-0, and Emy Myer and Jayden Whitford beat Emily Cornell and Samantha Toll, also 6-2, 6-0.
In boys singles, Baker’s Simon De Frutos Casado, an exchange student from Spain, beat Layne Fleharty, 6-1, 6-3.
Baker’s Zayne Hills beat Tristian Jennings, 6-2, 6-1.
In boys doubles, Baker’s Jacob Burton and Weston Burton lost to Brennan Cutler and Ian Esplin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Baker’s Theo Pepera and Gabe Schwartz beat Samuel Dorathy and Caleb Woodruff, 6-1, 6-1, and Orrin Anderson and Mercy Omidele lost to Rauiri Bunn and Derek Padilla, 8-4 in a pro set.
Boys at Madras tournament
On Saturday, April 5, the Baker boys competed in the White Buffalo Invitational tournament at Madras.
Other teams were Stayton, Estacada, Hidden Valley, Henley, Madras, The Dalles and Vale.
Singles players and doubles teams played seven sets (first player to win seven games), with final results determined by the total games won.
In the number one singles category, Simon De Frutos Casado placed eighth with 15 games won.
In number two singles, Hills finished sixth with 24 games.
In number one doubles, Baker’s Burton brothers finished fourth, winning 27 games.
In number two doubles, Pepera and Schwartz placed third with 31 games won.
In the team standings, Baker finished fourth with 97 games won.
