EUGENE — Baker junior Rasean Jones won the 110-meter hurdles race at the Oregon Relays at Eugene’s Hayward Field on Saturday, April 5.
Jones also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles.
He was competing in hurdles for the first time this season, just three weeks after helping the Baker basketball team win its second straight state championship.
He is the two-time defending Class 4A state champion in both hurdles races.
Jones won the 300 hurdles in the 2024 Oregon Relays, setting the meet record with 37.65 seconds. He later broke his own school record with a time of 37.38 seconds at the 2024 state meet, setting a Class 4A state record.
His time Saturday was 38.52 seconds, the fastest for any Oregon athlete in the meet.
Jones ran 14.34 in the 110-meter high hurdles. That’s just shy of his school record of 14.28, set last year at the district meet.
He ran a 13.96 in winning the state title in 2024. That’s a Class 4A record.
“For this being his second week of hurdling we are quite satisfied with where he is,” Baker coach Suzy Cole said of Jones’ performance. The 300 finals race was just 25 minutes after the 110.
“We head to Pasco next Saturday for another very competitive meet and so hope to see us be able to make some adjustments in the meantime,” Cole said.
“The Oregon Relays once again were a great time,” Cole said. “Our weather was amazing and the competition and facility just as amazing.”
Both of Baker’s 4×400 relay teams competed on Friday, April 4. The boys team is Henry Kamerdula, Jack Joseph, Henry Gaslin and Rasean Jones. The girls relay team is Claire Bachman, Kayla Coley, Meren Jesenko and Sammy Gressley.
“On the boys side of things Rasean is our only returning Hayward competitor and those other three boys ran absolutely amazing,” Cole said. “I was extremely impressed with their composure and confidence going into such a big meet for the first time and so early in the season, and they ran really tough so we are very excited about the potential of this group of kids. On the girls side this is my veteran team that ran at state last year and they continue to show their ability and ran really tough, obviously it’s early in the season and we need to get in a little bit better shape, but they competed so well and we are a very good starting point.”
On Saturday Baker’s 4×100 relay teams competed, with Johndale Buniag, Kamerdula, Lance Downing and Jones. The girls relay team is Bachman, Molly Rasmussen, Jesenko and Gressley.
