JOHN DAY — The Baker/Powder Valley/Pine Eagle softball team nearly got a win against two-time defending Class 2A/1A state champion Grant Union but a sixth-inning rally lifted the Prospectors to a 9-5 win on Friday, April 4.
The Bulldogs pulled within 5-4 with three runs in the top of the sixth, but Grant Union answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away.
Baker scored one run in the seventh, on Macey Morgan’s two-out home run, her second homer of the game, but couldn’t get closer.
The Bulldogs fell to 2-4 on the season.
After falling behind 5-1 after three innings, Baker rallied in the sixth.
Colbi Bachman was hit by a pitch to lead off, and Morgan followed with a two-run homer to center.
Kate Nilsen doubled with one out, and she scored on Oakley Anderson’s two-out single to cut the Prospectors’ lead to 5-4.
But Grant Union had three hits in the bottom of the sixth, and took advantage of a walk and an error, to score four insurance runs.
Morgan drove in three runs with her two homers. Raegan Gulick was 2 for 4, and Jaxyn Ramos, Nilsen and Paityn Barr each had a hit.
Baker opens its home schedule Saturday, April 5, against Crook County at noon at the Sports Complex.
