The Baker/Powder Valley baseball team ran its winning streak to four games, but it was nothing like as easy as the first three.

It took two extra innings, for one thing.

The Bulldogs rallied from multiple deficits against Melba, Idaho, before Ethan Fletcher’s walkoff single scored Jake McClaughry in the bottom of the ninth for a 9-8 win on Friday evening, April 4, at the Baker Sports Complex.

McClaughry led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on Zane Morgan’s bunt single.

After Melba took an 8-6 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, Baker tied it in the bottom of the inning.

Aldo Duran led off with a single, then Sage Joseph blasted a home run to left field.

Both teams were scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings.

McClaughry pitched the final four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Joseph had a triple as well as a home run and drove in four runs to lead Baker’s offense.

Jaxon Logsdon and Morgan were both 3 for 5, and Morgan had two RBIs, as did Fletcher. Duran was 2 for 3 and scored two runs.

The two teams combined for 34 hits — 18 for Baker and 16 for Melba.

Baker, 5-3 on the season and ranked eighth among Oregon’s Class 4A teams, opens the Greater Oregon League schedule Wednesday, April 9, traveling to La Grande for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
