Members of the Baker County Sheriff’s Office’s Search and Rescue team drove about 5 miles on a snow-covered road in Sumpter Valley to help a Baker City family whose vehicle broke down on Saturday, March 29.
The sheriff’s office dispatch center received a report at 10:52 p.m. of a family stranded on Deems Loop Road north of Phillips Reservoir, according to a press release.
Deputy Bo Hansen, along with Stephen Betts, a Forest Service law enforcement officer, talked with the caller, Micah Blank of Baker City. Blank told the officers that he, his wife and their young child had been traveling in their Geo Tracker, which is equipped with snow tracks, earlier in the day when the vehicle had a mechanical problem and couldn’t continue. He walked nearly 5 miles to reach cell service, while his wife and child stayed with the vehicle.
Four search and rescue members arrived with tracked side-by-sides and drove to where the mother and child were waiting in the vehicle.
