The Baker girls basketball team finally found its range from beyond the 3-point line, and that, combined with the Bulldogs cutting down on turnovers, transformed a tight game into a 57-48 win over Henley in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament Thursday night, March 13, at Forest Grove High School.

After trailing for most of the first half, during which they didn’t make a 3-pointer, the Bulldogs made three in the span of a few minutes early in the third quarter. Emy Myer had two of the long balls and Ashlyn Dalton the other, as Baker led 34-26.

Henley cut the lead to 34-30, but the Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run, including back-to-back baskets by Dalton and Myer’s layin, to push the lead back to 41-30.

Baker led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter, and after Henley trimmed the lead to four, at 50-46 with about three minutes left, Kathryn Gentry assisted Dalton on a basket and Baker used defense and free throws to hold off the Hornets.

After committing 13 turnovers in the first half, Baker was much more careful with the ball in the second half, with just seven miscues.

Henley, meanwhile, after 12 turnovers in the first half, had 14 more in the second half.

Molly Rasmussen led Baker with 21 points. Dalton and Lily Logsdon had 11 points each, and Myer added eight.

First quarter

Both teams had sluggish starts, with more turnovers than points for the first few minutes.

Henley’s main advantage was at the free throw line, as the Hornets were six for 10 from the line while Baker didn’t shoot a free throw in the first eight minutes.

Henley led 12-5 after the first quarter.

Second quarter

Molly Rasmussen scored eight straight points for Baker, including a shot that ended a 9-0 Henley run and cut the lead to 13-7. Baker got as close as 15-13 when Molly Rasmussen rebounded her own miss and scored.

But the Hornets scored four straight to boost their lead back to six, at 19-13.

Henley took its biggest lead at 21-13, but Logsdon had two straight baskets, the first after a steal,  Gentry assisted Dalton on an inside basket, and Molly Rasmussen swished a 12-footer from the baseline to cut the lead to 24-23 at halftime.

Third quarter

Baker didn’t make a 3-pointer in the first half, but in the span of a few minutes they made three, two by Emy Myer and one by Dalton, to take a 34-26 lead.

Henley scored four straight to get within 34-30, but the Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run, including back-to-back baskets by Dalton and Myer’s layin, to push the lead back to 41-30.

Henley ended the quarter with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 42-35 entering the final period.

Fourth quarter

Gracie Spike nailed a 3-pointer to open the quarter — Baker’s fourth of the second half — and Molly Rasmussen’s rebound basket increased Baker’s lead to 47-35, its bigggest of the game.

Henley got as close as 50-46 in the final three minutes, but Gentry made a nice pass to Dalton for a basket, and the Bulldogs made several free throws in the final minute to hold off the Hornets.
