The first Kid Librarian arrived with a plan, said Missy Grammon, youth services coordinator at the Baker County Library.
She said it took June Bevan, 10, only 15 minutes to pull her favorite books from the shelves and make a display in the library’s children’s area.
“She knew what she was doing,” Grammon said. “She came in with a plan — an entire list of books she loves to read.”
A special four-shelf display is new to the children’s area just for the Kid Librarian program.
“I saw another library do something similar and thought ‘I want to do that, too,'” she said.
Youngsters interested in creating their own display can fill out an application, which are in a basket near the display, with their name, phone/email, age and top three interests.
Grammon then calls each applicant and sets up an interview to explain the program.
“Then they go for it,” she said.
She’s received about five applications so far. Bevan was the first to create a display on Saturday, Feb. 22. Grammon said each Kid Librarian collection will run about two weeks before it is rearranged by the next reader.
“The purpose is to show off what kids are reading,” she said.
Although the Kid Librarian isn’t required to fill all four shelves, Bevan did just that with quite a variety: several books from the “Little House” series plus “The House on the Gulf” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, “Stitch Camp: 18 Crafty Projects for Kids and Tweens,” “Big Wig: A Little History of Hair” and a couple graphic novels.
Grammon is hoping the Kid Librarian displays will encourage other kids to pick up a new book.
“Sometimes peer suggestions are better than me saying for the hundredth time ‘You’re really going to like this book,'” she said.
All books in the Kid Librarian exhibit are available to check out.
Interested kids should be old enough to write their own name. For more information on the program, fill out an application or talk to Grammon at the library, 2500 Resort St.
