Girls quarterfinals
Union 50, Echo 44
The top-seeded Union Bobcats had to rally in the final two minutes to turn back Echo 50-44 on Wednesday, March 5, and advance to the semifinals in the Class 1A girls state basketball tournament at Baker High School.

Echo, which turned a 16-12 halftime deficit into a 31-25 lead by outscoring Union 19-9 in the third quarter, still clung to a 44-43 lead with less than two minutes left.

But the Cougars didn’t score again.

Union’s Kaelyn Shoemaker, who led all scorers with 17 points, scored with 1:33 left to give the Bobcats the lead for good.

The Bobcats led 16-12 at halftime despite shooting just 9.5% from the field. Union had a major advantage at the free throw line, making 11 of 16 in the first half. Echo didn’t shoot a free throw in the first half.

Union finished 25 of 39 from the line. Echo was 2 for 5.

The Cougars were called for 27 fouls and had two starters, Jaycee Campbell and Jude Royer, foul out. Union was whistled for five fouls.

Kenzie Hendrix led Echo with 12 points.

Sawyer Shoemaker added 14 for the Bobcats.

Jordan Valley 43, Country Christian 32
The Mustangs scored the first basket and never trailed.

Jordan Valley led by as much as 15 points, at 31-16 in the third quarter, but Country Christian rallied to get as close as 37-32 on Grace Colvin’s 3-pointer with 2:56 left.

The Mustangs scored the last six points, starting with Kenzie Tuttle’s jumper. Jalee Maestrejuan, who led Jordan Valley with 14 points, made three of four free throws in the final 21 seconds. Tuttle added 11 points.

Cara Mulhern was the only Country Christian player in double figures, with 10 points. Colvin had nine.

Crane 54, North Douglas 41
In a rematch of last year’s state title game, the Mustangs, defending state champions, raced to a 10-0 lead thanks to their smothering fullcourt press.

But North Douglas, after a second early timeout, calmed down.

Led by Brooklyn Cyr, who made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points in the first half, the Warriors had their own 10-point run and trailed just 12-11 after the first quarter.

North Douglas took its first lead in the second quarter and led 22-21 at halftime.

The Warriors continued to lead for the first few minutes of the third quarter, and neither team could take control until Crane scored seven straight points in the fourth quarter to take a 45-35 lead, and the Warriors couldn’t come back.

Ava Bowen led Crane with 17 points. Emily Clark had 16.

Cyr led all scorers with 28 points, including six 3-pointers.

Imbler 62, North Clackamas Christian 58
This game was competitive throughout, as the teams swapped the lead 12 times, half of those in the tense final quarter.

Imbler’s Mikinah Browne broke a 46-46 tie with a basket with 7:09 left.

Imbler extended the lead to 50-46 on Olivia Haddock’s basket with 5:33 remaining.

The Panthers maintained the lead for most of the fourth quarter, until a 6-0 North Clackamas Christian run gave the Saints a 54-52 lead.

Twin sisters Keslynn and Kaylee Turner, who combined for 47 of the Saints’ 58 points, fueled the rally.

Kaylee, who had 19 points, hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 52-51. Keslynn, who led all scorers with 28 points, converted a conventional three-point play to give the Saints the lead with 2:11 left.

Imbler’s Jayda Cant scored to tie it at 54, but North Clackamas regained the lead at 56-54 on Addie Porter’s basket with 1:47 left.

Jayda Cant made a free throw, and Rachael Stirewalt, who had 15 points, made a layin to give the lead back to the Panthers, 57-56 with 1:04 left.

Keslynn Turner answered with a layin with 39 seconds left for the Saints’ final lead.

Stirewalt scored with 18 seconds left to give Imbler a 59-58 edge. Jayda Cant rebounded a missed free throw and scored inside with 6 seconds left, and Olivia Haddock made a free throw with 3 seconds left for the final point.

Jayda Cant led Imbler with 16 points.

The Panthers outrebounded North Clackamas 53-31, including a 20-2 edge in offensive rebounds. Stirewalt had 18 rebounds and Jayda Cant 12.
