The Baker boys and girls basketball teams know who, and where, they’ll be playing in the Class 4A playoffs with a berth in the state tournament on the line.

The Bulldog boys, the defending state champions, will play host to The Dalles on Saturday, March 8, at 4 p.m.

The Baker girls, meanwhile, face a 524-mile trip across the length of Oregon to Coos Bay, where they will play Marshfield on Friday, March 7, at 8:30 p.m. 

No other Class 4A school is farther from Baker City than Marshfield.

(Although a route via Highway 26 through John Day and Prineville is about 75 miles shorter, school buses generally use I-84 to Portland, I-5 south past Eugene then west through the Coast Range on Highway 38 to Reedsport, then south on Highway 101 to Coos Bay.)

The state tournament is March 13-15 at Forest Grove High School.

Boys vs. The Dalles

The Dalles is 16-9 overall, 6-4 in the Tri-Valley Conference. 

Baker is 15-8, 6-0 in the Greater Oregon League.

Baker and The Dalles had five common opponents this season: Ontario, Pendleton, La Grande, Mountain View and Crook County. The Dalles was 4-3 against those teams, and Baker was 9-1.

Girls vs. Marshfield

Marshfield is 16-7 overall and 11-1 in the Sky-Em League. The Pirates have won their last 10 games.

Baker and Marshfield had three common opponents this season: Crook County, Seaside and Cottage Grove. Marshfield was 2-2 against those teams, while Baker was 4-1.
