BAKER/POWDER VALLEY WRESTLING AT STATE: Marli Lind wins first two matches, advances to semifinals; five other Bulldogs in action

PORTLAND — Marli Lind of Powder Valley, wrestling for the Baker/Powder Valley girls team, won her first two matches at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament Thursday, Feb. 27, at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum to advance to the semifinals.

Lind, a senior who won the district title earlier this month and was named the district’s outstanding wrestler of the year, pinned Reegan Peterson of Toledo in 1:32 in her first-round match, then pinned Peyton Buckley of Pleasant Hill in 1:09 in the quarterfinals.

Lind, who placed third in the state last year and second in 2023 as a sophomore in her first year wrestling, is the top seed this year at 155 pounds. She will take on Delilah Jaramillo of Rogue River, the fourth seed, in the semifinals on Friday afternoon.

Four other Bulldog girls, and Aldo Duran on the boys side, qualified for the state tournament.

All five were eliminated from the tournament on Thursday.

Also at 155 pounds, freshman Kate Norton beat Nicole Buxton of Scappoose, 6-2, in the first round. Norton lost by technical fall to Kaylianna Mazzuchi of North Bend in the quarterfinals, and moved to the consolation bracket, where was lost by fall to Lucy Camacho of Imbler and was eliminated from the tournament.

At 135 pounds, Lilly Collins pinned Madi Looney of Sweet Home in her first match, then lost 4-1 to top-seeded Kenadi Bonfield of Colton in the quarterfinals.

Collins then pinned Nova Woolworth of St. Helens to advance to the consolation second round, where she lost by 4-0 decision to Shyla Sells of Mazama.

At 110 pounds, Tessa Garrick lost by fall to Paxton Steele of Harrisburg in her first match, and Kylie Martin lost by fall to Vanessa Keller of Oakridge.

Garrick lost a 7-0 decision to Kasey Neal of Rainier in the consolation bracket and was eliminated.

Martin lost a 3-0 decision to Emerie Cox of Crook County and was eliminated.

Baker’s lone qualifier in the boys tournament, Aldo Duran, lost 11-7 to River Sandstrom of Philomath in his first match at 120 pounds.

Duran than pinned Titus Johnson of Mazama in 43 seconds to advance to the consolation second round. Duran then lost 15-10 to Justin England of Crook County in Duran’s final high school match.

Duran placed third in the state as a junior in 2024, and fourth as a sophomore in 2023.
