Glow art, an auction and more: Baker Early Learning Center plans fundraiser

Rosie Mello was determined to paint every single inch of her paper, from the blue sky above to the green grass below to the owl with bright pink wings.

After one final touch, she grinned at her masterpiece.

Now it must dry, but in just a few weeks she’ll get to see her bright owl glow under a black light at an art show and fundraiser for the Baker Early Learning Center in Baker City.

The event is Friday, March 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at BELC, 2725 Seventh St. The community is welcome to attend.

The evening will feature a 50/50 raffle and silent auction with desserts, gift baskets and unique items, such as a pie for a month for a year. Also, the evening is the first chance to buy tickets for a handmade quilt — the winner will be drawn during Books and Bingo night on April 3.

Each kindergarten class painted a different animal in special paints that will be featured in a glow room, and additional student art will be on display with some for sale.

Art projects vary by class. For instance, Melissa Garner’s class worked with art students at Baker High School to create ceramic monsters based on the book “Where the Wild Things Are.” After reading the story, each student drew their version of a monster. The high schoolers turned those drawings into a ceramic sculpture, and the kindergartners returned to choose glaze colors.

A few of those monsters will be for sale at the show, Garner said.

Cristina Hyde, BELC principal, said the art show is the school’s main fundraiser that pays for field trips to the pumpkin patch and movie theater, as well as a celebration at the end of the school year.

The BELC campus includes six kindergarten classes.
