- Alpenglow on Elkhorn Peak west of Baker City on the morning of Feb. 8, 2025.
With fresh snow cover, mostly clear skies and light winds — the perfect combination for chilly temperature — it has dipped to 9 below zero this morning, Feb. 8, at the Baker City Airport.
It is the first sub-zero day at the airport in what has been a relatively mild winter.
The previous low was 3 degrees, just before midnight on Feb. 7.
Temperatures in Baker City are warmer, with 4 degrees recorded on the west side of town. The airport, which is near the lowest part of Baker Valley, typically is at least several degrees colder than the city on clear, calm nights. Other parts of the valley often are much colder as well, including between Baker City and Haines. A weather station east of Haines recorded 7 below, and one southwest of Haines measured 6 below.
The lowest temperature in December was 16, the warmest on record, breaking the previous mark of 14 degrees set the year before, 2023.
Temperature records for the airport date to 1944, and since then there have been just 11 of 81 years when the temperature didn’t drop below zero on at least one day.
Six of those 11 years have been since 1997. The list:
