A pair of state wildlife biologists concluded after following tracks in the snow at Baker City’s Mount Hope Cemetery on Feb. 6 that the 6-month-old female cougar that a Baker City Police officer shot early that day in the cemetery was traveling alone.

Two snowstorms in three days, after a relatively tranquil early winter, prompted Baker City public works crews to bring out the fleet of graders, loaders and plows to clear the city’s heavier traveled streets for the first time this season.

A new program through the Baker County Dementia Friendly Community project invites people to “support social engagement among isolated rural and remote older adults” with activities that “increase social connection and decrease isolation for a suicide-safer Oregon.” Participants in the free classes learn to tie-dye, sculpt clay and paint masks.
