- Theodore Tachenko wore a bow tie, cowboy hat and boots to watch his dad, Ryan, auction desserts at a fundraiser for the Enterprise SDA Christian School on Jan. 27, 2024. Theo died three days later in an accident near Lostine.
A family that moved from Baker City to Wallowa County in 2023 is looking for a place to erect a cross to remember their son, Theo Tachenko, who died in an accident in their driveway on Jan. 30, 2024.

Blaze, a beloved but elderly dog, went missing on Jan. 12 near the Haines dump, and his owner, Megan Kendall of Baker City, feared she would not find Blaze alive. But after the 16-year-old dog had been missing for more than a day, two Haines teenagers, Diego Jones-Bedolla, 19, and Benjamin Bradford, 16, found Blaze and reunited him with Kendall. The friends turned down a $1,000 reward.

Significant hurdles remain, but an effort in the works for almost three decades to restore Amtrak passenger train service to Baker City received a boost this month when the Federal Railroad Administration included the route among 15 long-distance runs that it recommends the federal government consider adding to Amtrak’s schedule.

Baker County’s tourism marketing director will use cellphone data — just the location, not names or other personal information — to try to fine-tune the county’s marketing efforts based on the events and destinations that visitors like most.
